Smoke Alarms & Still People DIE

A great deal is made of the fact that smoke alarms "protect" you from fire - THEY DON'T !!!!!

If fitted correctly  (and are working, which may be another topic later on)  they merely give you early notification of a fire occurring - bringing home that well known fact "there's no smoke without fire".

However contrary to what West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue will  have you believe, fatalities due to  house fires are rising.

Below is a link to an article from the BBC which show that there is a direct correlation between deaths and alcohol consumption.

Sheila Merrill, from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, said many people who had died had not heard alarms as they had been in a deep sleep due to medication or alcohol.
"In some instances, they could have heard the alarm but their exit out of the house is actually blocked by the fire, so they're still unable to get out.
"And what we have to remember is that nine times out of 10, it's not the fire that kills you, it's the smoke."

Lets start with South Morley in Leeds  - which is going to see an increase in response time of 3 minutes should the new proposals be approved. After watching this video you will see how fast a fire can catch in just three minutes

If after watching this video (whether you live in Morley or  not) and you haven't had your free home fire safety check from West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue yet, you can book one on line by clicking  here for further details . If you would like to voice your opposition to these proposed cuts please send an email to WYFRS by clicking consultation@westyorksfire.gov.uk

You will only get a visit if you fit the criteria ie if your fit healthy and work for a living you probably won't unless you live in a station area they want to close then you will get a visit because it reduces the risk so the figures fit to make it low risk area
Talk about discrimination

So why do fire engines cruise the streets of my area (Rothwell Leeds) knocking on doors asking if you want one?

Oh sorry just read the above - they are closing Rothwell arent they? That explains it. Doh!

They are going around in East End Park too touting for business. They want to get the risk down from VERY HIGH to HIGH. Which i suspect will happen shortly after they sell Gipton to be flattened and sold.

Lets not forget we've been fitting smoke detectors for years and years (about 10 or more from my memory) and the risk still hasn't been reduced. Besides, when was the last time you saw a smoke alarm carry someone out of a burning building??
